Expand your opportunities by finding a specialty

Expand your opportunities by finding a specialty I spent two hours this week writing an article about autism. My son was diagnosed with autism and I could write five hundred pages about dealing with the diagnosis. But then I reminded myself about specializing. About focus. Specialists get a lot of good things in this world, and people who dabble in everything get nothing. Dabbling is fine, to a point. I mean, you have to dabble to figure out what you want to be a specialist in. But lets be real. I write a career column. I have a book about careers coming out. I speak at universities about careers. I am not an autism writer. So I trashed the autism article. Because its not going to help my career in a focused way. Sure, it might help in a haphazard way, the way playing basketball at the park helps your career because you never know what will come of anything. But the only way to reach focused career goals is to have focused efforts. I stick to writing about careers because specialization is the ticket to freedom from boring and inflexible work. Lets say you want to have every other Wednesday off to go to a yoga class. If you are a specialist who would be hard to replace, your boss will be more likely to say yes than if five hundred entry-level people can do what you do. The more you need, the more this rule applies. Moving in and out of the workforce is easier once youve established that youre great at a specific thing. And entrepreneurship is easier as specialist, too, because one of best ways to gauge aptitude is if that person has a strong knowledge base and network in the field of the proposed business. You dont have to specialize right away, but you should see your work path as a quest for specialization. View random corporate jobs as possible apprenticeships. You dont need to know what youll specialize in, but you need to be open to it when it comes. Specialization often creeps up on you, like a friend who you never expected to turn out to be a friend. When I first started writing columns, I had no idea that I would write about careers. I was hired to write about what its like to be a female executive. I tried lots of different types of columns. I wrote about software development (my specialty at the time). I wrote about consumer products (definitely not my specialty). Those columns flopped, and so did most of my columns that were not, in some way, about careers. I learned by trial and error that I was a career writer. It is always scary to specialize because there are so many jobs that become out of your focus. But there is good research to show that you will have an easier time staying employed if you specialize. Specialization is also scary because we think we need to address all aspects of our personality with our work. But no work can do that. Autism, for example, is important to me right now, but it doesnt need to be important in my work. In fact, work is sometimes a nice break from that aspect of my life. My son was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, which is a type of autism that occurs when someone has a very high IQ but a large deficit in social skills. His teachers taught him a way to leverage his specialty memorizing to learn rules for socializing that other people know intuitively. I learned many lessons from watching him do that. One is that once you have a specialty, you can leverage it to add things that are not necessarily your specialty, but you still want to have them in your life. In that way, a specialized path is one of the most diverse and rewarding paths you can choose.

Use this Strategy to Realize Several Success Strategies - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career A public speaking class offers more to students than just the art of how to present on a stage. The most important lesson is how to speak with confidence. And the second is how to adjust the stories to a variety of platforms. Online Communication Your smile is detected as you write or communicate online. And your profile picture should show a smile, too. It’s your friendly style in every respect that will earn a greater number of prospective clients and online followers. Be the one who takes the initiative to get to know one another. Apps make it easy to arrange appointments. Or, become your own app. Make it very easy for the other person to agree to an appointment by providing a range of dates and times. Next  suggest they either select one, or provide  alternate times to do so. Lastly, offer to initiate the call. Authenticate During your down time, think back to past interactions. Are there areas in which you may improve your “make it easy” state of mind? Reflect on other experiences where you were impressed by the conversation and ease of doing business. What stood out most? Consider adapting that style to your way of conducting business. Face the Facts Professionals need to face the fact that the phone is essential to making most appointments. Driving Change from the Bottom

Driving Change from the Bottom Can change really happen from the bottom and move up the ladder? Do grass-roots efforts succeed? I attended the local meetup of Linchpins are Everywhere Raise the Flag last night. For those who dont know what I am talking about, Seth Godin, author of Linchpin and many other books and one of the most popular blogs on the block organized a worldwide meetup of linchpins. The mission: A completely non-commercial chance to find and connect with other members of Seths tribe, an opportunity to talk, challenge, and inspire your fellow travelers. What happened? A small group of people with one common connection, Seth, met to talk about his ideas and our own as well. We were from different occupations and different generations. The common thread was enough to unite us. No one was sure where this was headed or what the outcome would be, but there was enough interest to draw a small crowd. What happened, really? We sat around and talked about stuff. We discussed linchpin-ness and how to carry it out. We talked about how we might like to meet again and what that might look like. No, what really happened? It brought together people. Isnt that enough? Thanks to our local organizer, Juli Klie for making this happen. I met some new terrific people and re-connected with others.

3 reasons youre missing the mark on a perfect job match

3 reasons you’re missing the mark on a perfect job match Unemployment has seen a decline in recent months, creating more competition and making it harder for recruiters to hire. And despite the advent of new human resources technology, the hiring process remains arduous for recruiters and job candidates alike. Beyond, an online career network that connects job seekers and employers, conducted a national survey of HR professionals and found that, in general, organizations are struggling to hire the right candidates. According to the findings, more than half of HR professionals said it’s more difficult to find qualified job candidates these days. More than a million jobs were added in 2015 so far, but it will take time to fill them all. Does the hiring bottleneck start with the job seeker or hiring manager? Here are three factors that might be causing the problem: 1. Job candidates appear unreliable The survey indicated that 71 percent of respondents aren’t willing to hire job hoppers, or someone who has served several positions in a short period of time. A common mistake for candidates is handing in resumes that are exhaustive rather than strategic. According to Joe Weinlick, senior vice president of marketing for Beyond, it’s important for those on the job hunt to structure a resume strategically and only highlight experience relevant to the position. “Having a lot of experience is a great thing, but you don’t want to be considered a job hopper,” said Weinlick. “Pay close attention to how you present your experience. If you don’t, an employer will pass you over for someone who does.” 2. There is a technological disconnect It’s clear that mobile job search is changing the recruiting industry. The desktop job search has become much less significant since smartphone and tablet technology became every bit as capable as traditional online job hunting. Surprisingly, more than half of HR professionals admitted they don’t have a mobile-friendly job application process despite an upward trend in mobile job seeking. Employers should be taking advantage of technology by focusing on those who are “always on” and on-the-go. Those who are not embracing today’s technology are missing out on groups of qualified talent. 3. You rule out slobs About 60 percent of HR professionals aren’t willing to hire a skilled candidate if he or she isn’t a polished dresser. While dressing for the job you want is important, so is not judging a book by its cover. Many workplaces are becoming more casual, and ruling out a job candidate simply based on attire only further reduces the amount of qualified job candidates that companies have to consider. “Recruiters shouldn’t discard skilled job candidates because they don’t approve of their attire, especially if it’s during the first interview, continued Weinlick. Finding the right job candidate can take months of searching, so anyone with the right qualifications should be given a fair chance. Getting the right candidate to dress the way you want is a lot easier than getting the wrong candidate to have the qualifications you need.” As businesses continue to grow and the economy continues to improve, building out a reliable and talented workforce will become even more important. However, there are many nuances to consider during the hiring process. Keep this advice in mind when looking to fill positions at your company, and you may more effectively and efficiently recruit the next crop of quality talent. And find your perfect match!
